Miami-based sculptor Christina Lei Rodriguez’s first show with Team revisits her usual look of flora overgrown to ominous proportions, but the new work abandons her typical adornments of glitter and rhinestones for more industrial-feeling materials like PVC and Plexiglass. Still, though, Rodriguez fashions phantasms of brightly colored plants that, like cancerous kitsch, consume neutral forms. She collapses the beautiful and monstrous in controlled eruptions of simulacra of natural materials, with the final product embalmed in a thick coat of resin. The sculptures are tactile, grotesque, and kinetic; Rodriguez reaches a level of controlled vulgarity that one can’t help but to adore.

The smallish show includes only three sculptures with six objects new for the artist; in “Contained 1-6,” Rodriguez inverts her explosions, making painterly forms inside of Plexiglass boxes with a dirt-like material.
