Sundays New York

The past few years have seen an explosion of curatorially-minded websites; see Group Show and Solo Show (humbleartsfoundation.org); The Highlights (thehighlights.org); i heart photograph (iheartphotograph.blogspot.com); and Why + Wherefore (whyandwherefore.com), which in the interest of full disclosure is co-directed by yours truly. But the most intriguing by far is an artist-run dark horse called Sundays New York (sundaysnewyork.com). Every two months the site’s director/curator/participating artist Jeffrey Tranchell curates a small group show from work contributed by a select circle of friends and associates. Lucky for Tranchell, his friends make great work—a point proved by a recent deluge of their group and solo shows at venues like Daniel Reich, Rivington Arms, and John Connelly.

The work shows a fresh perspective and is consistently compelling; the site captures (or perhaps defines) a spare and obliquely conceptual new aesthetic formulated by the most heavily featured artists, among them Sean Raspet, Michael E. Smith, Nolan Simon, Joshua Smith, Brian Clifton, and Arnd Seibert.
